There is nothing written in the music scriptures that singer/songwriters must be acoustic, and while there are some very talented people doing that, let’s face it – it can all be a bit dull, can’t it? Originally beginning life as a side project while he played guitar in an ill-fated band, Tom Baines decided that his solo project needed a name, feeling that if anyone were to see ‘Tom Baines’ on the billing somewhere they would be expecting a David Gray or James Blunt type act – and that couldn’t be further from the mark.
Baggage certainly benefits from Tom Baines’ power, energy - and a little distortion. The sound brings back memories of early nineties grunge, but with a distinctly modern twist. Thoughtful and intelligent pieces, with multitudinal changes in levels and volume, melodic sweeping verses, punctuated by choruses that demand your attention, never once betraying the one man, one guitar, one vocals setup by making it sound anything less than huge.
